The seventh volume of the Subseciva Groningana was originally intended to contain the acts of the ´Byzantine´session on legal teaching and practice in the Justinianic age in the XXXth ´Deutscher Rechtshistoriker tag´of Regensburg, september 1998, as well as the translation and commentary on the prooimion of the Eisagoge. Whilst the latter is included here, for various reasons it has proved impossible to collect the Regensburg acts. Two papers delivered to that session, however, appear here, by Joèlle Beaucamp and Fausto Goria respectively, who have been patient enough to wait until Jan Lokin and Bernard Stolte had written articles on an aspect of legal practice of the same period. The four together are offered here as a small token of gratitude to our Regensburg colleagues for making available a fruitful and pleasant afternoon in their programme. Tom van Bochove's paper on the terminus technicus 'diairesis' forms an intermezzo before the prooimion of the Eisagoge.
