Having completed his codification in 534, the emperor Justinian went on publishing laws (called "Novels") until his death in 565. These laws, more than 150 in number, contain all kinds of subject matter; moreover, several ones are long texts treating many different subjects. The present work tries to help the historian who wants to find his way in this labyrinth by exposing the material of the Novels in a systematic order based on the arrangement of subject matter generally used in textbooks and student manuals of continental law. Those who would expect an order different from that given in the book, will probably still find what they are looking for by consulting the wordlist (table alphabétique générale) in which the author has tried to assemble a large range of words chosen with a view to give assistance also to readers who have only a superficial knowledge of the French language.  N. VAN DER WAL was a professor in Roman and Byzantine law at the Faculty of Law from the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen in the Netherlands.
